The Equinox is a time of balance between light and dark, day and night, feminine and masculine. Join us as we explore mythic themes and ancient mysteries of this day.
In the northern hemisphere, the season is turning to the autumn harvest. We are enjoying the first taste of fall, aspen leaves turning yellow, and relief from the heat.
But in Peru, the September equinox is spring planting season. Communities there participate in traditional ceremonies honoring Mother Earth—Pachamama.
And for balancing masculine and feminine ... Peruvian traditions typically honor both. It is the balance of earth and sky, Inti, the Sun God, and Pachamama, Mother Earth. Or the balance of Inti and Mama Quilla, who is the Inca goddess of the moon.
But you may wonder, Sun Goddesses? in Celtic lands? Yes!
One goddess duo is the Irish Grian (or Gráinne) and her sister goddess Aine. The Irish word for sun is ghrian and the sisters rule over the winter and summer suns, respectively.
August 1st marked the high point of the sunny Irish God Lugh, and the harvest of barley and other grains. The fall equinox, however, is a time when the most ancient goddess of the land, the Callliagh, steps back on stage and begins to reclaim her power.
There is a hollow hill (stone cairn) in Ireland which has marked the rising of the Equinox sun for thousands of years. The story is that as she was shaping the landscape and mountains, the Callieach stumbled and fell, dropping large stones from her apron, forming the cairns we see today on the hill of Loughcrew. Within one cairn, there is an exquisitely carved calendar stone, which is still lit up by the sunrise every Equinox, both Autumn and Spring.
We will discover more about the these ancient mysteries, and also reflect on the balance of light and dark in our own lives on this special day.
