Music and Stoicism
Details
“When forced, as it seems, by circumstances into utter confusion, get a hold of yourself quickly. Don’t be locked out of the rhythm any longer than necessary. You’ll be able to keep the beat if you are constantly returning to it.” —MARCUS AURELIUS, MEDITATIONS, 6.11
Stoicism and music may not seem like an obvious pairing, but there is a rich vein of Stoic lessons to be learned from how we listen to and play music. In fact Stoic music can be found everywhere from Ulysses and the Sirens to the Hannah Montana Movie!
We invite you to join us for a lively discussion about Stoic principles and practice, and how they can help us to live a good life. All are welcome, whether you are well versed in Stoicism, a Stoic novice, or are simply curious to learn more.
And if you have any favourite songs that include Stoic themes then please do let me know and I will try to include them in the meeting.
