Balance - The Golden Mean
Details
“For the Stoics, temperance wasn’t punishment—it was protection. In reining in excess, we gain a quieter form of happiness: stability, clarity, and control over ourselves.” – Glenn Citerony
The Stoic virtue of moderation, or temperance, can easily be seen as the least appealing of the cardinal virtues. While justice, wisdom and courage are all clearly positive, moderation can be seen to be more negative in its connotations – austerity, self denial and holding back. Perhaps a better way of looking at moderation is to think of it as finding our Goldilocks zone: neither too hot nor too cold, neither too hard nor too soft, but finding what is just right for a good life.
This month we will be taking a look at the virtue of moderation, and how it can bring balance to our lives.
We invite you to join us for a lively discussion about Stoic principles and practice, and how they can help us to live a good life. All are welcome, whether you are well versed in Stoicism, a Stoic novice, or are simply curious to learn more.
