Wickenburg Mountains Trail

Details

We will meet at the Everett Bowman Rodeo Grounds, 935 Constellation Rd, Wickenburg, AZ. Approaching Wickenburg on E Wickenburg Way (US 60) the meet-up spot can be located by turning either North on Recreo Dr just before the Subway or turning North on Constellation Rd right behind the McDonald's. From either turn it is about a mile drive to the rodeo grounds.

We will meet at the parking lot of the rodeo grounds at 8:15 AM for air down and a short drivers' meeting. From the rodeo grounds we will head to the trail.

Since the trail crosses Arizona State Trust Land in places it is the responsibility of all drivers to have a current State Trust Land Recreational Use Permit available to purchase online at the Arizona State Land Department:

The trail passes through the Wickenberg Mountains, south and west of the Bradshaw Mountains. The trail conditions have eroded over the past few years, but this trip has been suitable for stock high clearance 4x4 vehicles with off-road tires and some driver experience.

The Wells guide (Trail #44 in the 2nd edition) rates this trail as "Difficult" due to "washouts in sandy canyon bottoms." The trail is 21 miles long, and the dirt roads to the trailhead and out from the end of the trail are another 29 miles long.

Some of the sites to see include the Monte Christo Mine, Issac Bradshaw's grave, Annie May White's grave, the ghost towns of Constellation City and Copperopolis, a small canyon toward the end of the run, and with any luck, some wild burros! We will also pass by the Castle Hot Springs resort as we come out on the road to Crown King near the end of the day.

As usual, bring along appropriate survival and extraction equipment and supplies: water for you, passengers & vehicle; tools & recovery gear; clothing & footwear suitable for walking about in the desert; lunch & snacks; and, items for your comfort such as chairs, shade, hats & sun protection.

Please note that the weather forecast, wildfires, or other unforeseen events may change our plans at any time, so please check here for updates as the date approaches.
