Enter Box Canyon/Exit Walnut Canyon

We'll meet at McDonald's, 801 N Highway 79 in Florence at 8:15 AM, air down there and after a drivers' meeting depart for the trail around 8:30.

The plan is to approach Box Canyon via Price Rd, head North in Box Canyon, turn East on Martinez Canyon Trail and turn South toward the Gila River. From there the trail roughly parallels the river until we run into Walnut Canyon Trail, around Battle Axe Butte and exit onto Battle Axe Rd at the air up spot, AZ Route 177 south of Superior.

We haven't run these trails since February 2019 when they featured a variety of challenges: off-camber shelf roads, washes with sand, gravel & a few boulders, steep climbs & descents, a few steps 2 to 3 feet high and washouts on the climbs of the eastern side of the Walnut Canyon loop. The trails call for at least 32" off road tires (no street tires), limited slip or lockers and some driver experience helpful at times.

Please make sure that you have a GMRS radio, recovery points/gear, and a spare tire, also lunch, snacks, water for you and your passengers, and clothing/footwear suitable for the weather conditions - partly cloudy, cool and a bit windy is the forecast as of this posting.

We will have occasion to cross AZ State Trust Land which requires each vehicle to have a State Trust Land Permit. Drivers are responsible for their vehicle and having a current permit with them. The PEV4x4 club uses the following for communication: GMRS channel 16 (462.575 MHz) with a DCS privacy code of 16, and HAM radio simplex frequency 147.520.
