Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757), was one of the three great composers born in 1685 (Bach, Handel, Scarlatti). Both Bach and Handel showed early genius as composers. Scarlatti's genius showed itself slowly starting when he was 54 years old. His father was Alessandro Scarlatti from Italy. Alessandro wrote sacred choral works and secular operas. He was a well regarded composer then and now. Domenico followed in his father's style and wrote secular choral works during his early professional compositional life. Unfortunately for Domenico, he did not have his father's flair for the dramatic nor his melodic gifts. Domenico moved to Spain to teach the eventual Queen and absorbed Spanish musical culture. During this period he became known as a great composer because of his keyboard sonatas, surpassing his father in reputation and even today considered a great late Baroque composer.
