If All Is Predetermined, Is Free Will Real or Just an Illusion?

Details

September's study will be conducted by Bro. Anthony Sokol as he asks the question, "If All Is Predetermined, Is Free Will Real or Just an Illusion?"

Synopsis:
In this MPS discussion, we will explore the tension between free will and determinism through the multi-layered simulated reality of the film The Thirteenth Floor. Released in 1999, this sci-fi neo-noir presents a compelling argument for hard determinism by constructing a narrative of simulations nested within simulations. This framework provides a unique lens for examining the philosophical problem of free will. By introducing characters who are sentient and self-aware, yet exist only as lines of code, the film compels us to confront a central question: if our thoughts, desires, and actions are merely the predetermined results of an external system, can we truly claim to possess free will? We will analyze key plot points as metaphorical representations of deterministic principles, such as the nature of simulated beings, the transfer of consciousness, and the ultimate revelation. For Freemasons, this exploration resonates with the Craft’s own inquiry into the balance between destiny and agency, fate and self-mastery. The Thirteenth Floor is thus more than a science fiction thriller; it is a philosophical meditation on existence, agency, and consciousness, suggesting that what we perceive as free will may be nothing more than a beautifully constructed and inescapable illusion.
