About Rebecca:
Rebecca's Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, about mothers and daughters, female friendships, alcoholism, and spirituality, was on the #1 NY Times Bestseller list for over a year, winner of the American Booksellers Award, and short-listed for the Orange Prize. The book launched a host of "Ya-Ya" clubs worldwide, as well as a host of books about girlfriends, and was made into a feature film by Warner Brothers. Her novel has been translated into 28 languages, has sold over 6 million copies, and continues to be one of the most beloved novels about women written in the 20th century.
Since recovering from Lyme's disease, part of her work involves examining the relationships among human-caused climate disaster, human forest encroachment, the weaponizing of living beings, inter-species illnesses, and the psycho-spiritual-physical Earthly and Universal loss and grief that accompanies the unholy addiction to oil and the greed that spawns all of this.
Rebecca studied Tibetan Buddhism and creative writing at the Naropa Institute. She is still exploring, with gratitude, what it means to be a sibling to every other creature. Currently, she is writing a new book which is influenced by her choice to live as a vegetarian, and then, starting in 2018, as a vegan. Rebecca paraphrases I.B. Singer, the Jewish writer and activist, when she says, “Veganism is my religion.”
