Most software gets built on a stack of separate tools piled on top of each other, and a lot of the complexity lives in the seams between them. What if you did it all at once, in one thing? Darklang is that experiment.

Stachu Korick has been working on Darklang for the past five years. While the implementation is in F#, there is much here to discuss for all .NET developers. Many implementation ideas are unique and prevent problems in compilation and help to reason about the code. It publishes as a self contained Native AOT binary and builds code to WebAssembly (it's not Blazor, though).

The language, the type checker, the runtime, version control and the package manager are one program, and it ships as one binary

It's .NET (F#) the whole way down, from the lexer and parser through the type checkers to the interpreter and compiler. Everything above that line is written in Darklang itself, including the CLI, the standard library and the language server.

You do NOT need to know F# to learn about what it takes to build a platform entirely in .NET.
