Beyond Autocomplete: Moving 200 Engineers from Copilot to Claude
Details
AI coding assistants started as smarter autocomplete. Simpson Strong-Tie, a 6,500-person manufacturer of structural building products, is moving past that. The company is retiring GitHub Copilot and moving 200 developers and QA engineers to Claude, with spec-driven development at the center. Specs come first, and Claude works from them.
Bill Wolff, software architect and Microsoft MVP, covers why the company made the switch, how the rollout is being run, and what spec-driven development looks like in daily work. Then he goes live, walking through the 5–10 projects he juggles at once: greenfield cloud-native apps, migrations off aging desktop technology, Azure Monitor workbooks, and Azure deployments. Each is backed by a documentation trail across GitHub, Confluence, Jira, and draw.io. You’ll see how specs, tickets, and diagrams give Claude the context it needs to do real work.
The session closes with a candid, off-the-slides discussion of results so far. Bring your questions.
⚠️ Microsoft requires everyone to check-in before entering their facility. You must provide your first and last name when signing up for this in-person event to be on the attendees list we submit to Microsoft.
