As some of you may remember, the Freethought Society was going to host author and attorney Andrew L. Seidel back on April 23rd, but the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak and the resulting quarantines. Luckily, the American Atheists Summer Series is hosting a virtual event with Seidel on the evening of June 3rd, so if you're interested you can tune in and listen to him speak.

This event is FREE, but you'll need to sign up here:

EVENT DESCRIPTION:
Renowned constitutional scholar Erwin Chemerinsky described Andrew Seidel's The Founding Myth as “a beautifully written book” that “explodes a frequently expressed myth: that the United States was created as a Christian nation.”

Not only are we not a Christian nation, argues Seidel, but Christian principles are so opposed to American principles that it’s fair to say, “Christianity is un-American.” This book has been described as a cross between Howard Zinn's "People’s History of the United States" and Richard Dawkins' "The God Delusion." It is 250 pages of history, law, religion, philosophy, and current events written by an irreverent attorney who argues these issues for a living.

Andrew Seidel will be in conversation with Nick Fish, the President of American Atheists.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

  • Andrew Seidel graduated cum laude from Tulane University ('04) with a B.S. in neuroscience and environmental science and magna cum laude from Tulane University Law School ('09), where he was awarded the Haber J. McCarthy Award for excellence in environmental law. He studied human rights and international law at the University of Amsterdam and traveled the world on Semester at Sea. Andrew completed his Master of Laws at Denver University Sturm College of Law with a perfect GPA ('11) and was awarded the Outstanding L.L.M. Award.

Andrew currently works as the Director of Strategic Response at the "Freedom From Religion Foundation" (FFRF) where he works to ensure that the government obeys the First Amendment and that Jefferson’s “wall of separation” between state and church remains tall and impregnable. When not litigating cases or standing up for freethinkers’ rights at FFRF he blogs at Freethought Now! and occasionally writes for Slate, ThinkProgress, Religion News Service, Rewire News and other publications.

  • Nick Fish studied political science at Albion College and currently serves as the President of American Atheists. He is a seasoned civil rights and civil liberties activist with more than a decade of political, organizing, and leadership experience with many of the nation’s most prominent political organizations and progressive non-profits. Before his appointment as president, Nick served as Development Director and National Program Director for American Atheists.
