IS LEFT-WING EXTREMISM A REAL THREAT?

INTRODUCTION:

Back in June, we had a meetup entitled "Is Christian Nationalism a Real Threat?" where initially we looked at what sociologists & psychologists call the "construct validity" of "Christian Nationalism" and then moved on to evaluating the research that linked it with COVID denialism, Trump support, belief in QAnon conspiracy theories, and right-wing terrorism. One of the most surprising takeaways was that people who score high on Whitehead & Perry's "Christian Nationalist" scale tended to not regularly attend church, suggesting that they'd drifted away from organized religion and found a surrogate form of religion in right-wing extremism. We also asked whether pundits & activists on the political left might be exaggerating the threat of Christian Nationalism and equating all conservative Christians with right-wing extremists.

In this meetup, we'll adopt a similar approach to the phenomenon of left-wing extremism. In the first section, we'll look at debates in sociology & psychology over the construct validity of "left-wing authoritarianism" and see how it might be connected to recent studies on the growing "political cynicism" among young people that makes them more willing to endorse the breaking of liberal democratic norms. While conservative pundits have often tried to tie left-wing extremism to the Democratic Party, it's worth considering if it may be a product of people on the left becoming disillusioned with & alienated from the Democratic Party, much like Christian Nationalism appears to be driven by people on the right becoming alienated from mainstream Christian churches & disillusioned with the GOP establishment.

In the second section, we'll look back at the anti-police protests & riots in 2020 and the debate over whether they were "mostly peaceful" or the most destructive wave of riots in American history since the 1960s. We'll look at the debate over whether violence that broke out at these protests was mostly orchestrated by left-wing radical groups like Antifa or mostly just the work of opportunistic looters & vandals. We'll also consider the long-term costs of these protests/riots and look at the debate over whether they may have created a "Minneapolis effect" that reduced policing and increased violent crime rates across the country.

In the third section, we'll look at the debates over left-wing radical groups variously referred to as Antifa, Black Bloc, and "anarchist violent extremists" or AVEs according to FBI terminology. We'll also look at the debate to how left-wing extremist groups & right-wing extremist groups compare in terms of the damage they cause, and whether it's generally true that left-wing extremist groups cause more property damage & intimidation of political opponents in urban areas, but right-wing extremist groups kill more people - albeit it's usually either their own associates or police trying to apprehend them.

In the fourth section, we'll look at the debates over black nationalist & separatist groups such as the Nation of Islam, the New Black Panther Party, the Black Hebrew Israelites, Moorish sovereign citizens, the Not F*ckng Around Coalition (NFAC), some of which have recently been classified by the FBI as "Black Identity Extremists" (BIEs). We'll also look at the recent debates over the role of black identity extremism in generating black-on-Jewish & black-on-Asian hate crimes, and whether the apparent rise in these two types of hate crimes is borne out by the crime data.

RELEVANT MATERIAL FROM PAST MEETUPS:

In the 1st section of this meetup, we'll look at debates over the psychological factors behind left-wing extremism. In May of 2016, the Philly Political Agnostics explored various psychological & sociological theories that might shed light on the rise of an activist faction on the progressive left colloquially known as "social justice warriors" (SJWs), the "illiberal left" or the "regressive left". There's a variety of theories for some of the more extreme behavior by SJWs, such as a left-wing variant of authoritarianism, an excessively high level of Agreeableness that leads to "pathological altruism", and a tendency towards "hypermentalizing" (overinferring other people's mental state) which can lead to paranoid social cognition.

In the second section, we'll look at the 2020 protests & riots. Back in July 2020, we had a meetup entitled "Hypervigilance and 'Protest Panics'" and in the 2nd section we looked at the debates over whether "Antifa" or the "Boogaloo Boys" were behind the violence at recent protests that devolved into riots. As we discussed, arrest records appear to indicate that most people involved in looting & vandalism during the riots weren't part of formal activist groups on either the far left or far right but were merely opportunists.

We had a meetup back in October of 2020 entitled "Political Pseudoscience & Progressivism" and in the 3rd section we discussed whether or not the Democratic Party & the mainstream media became "useful idiots" for Antifa groups behind some of violence during the 2020 protests, or whether Democrats avoided talking about the episodes of looting & arson merely to try to prevent conservatives from derailing policing reform by making harping on the radical fringe.

Debates about left-wing extremism & its role in the 2020 riots invariably invite comparisons with the right-wing extremism that drover Trump supporters to storm the Capitol on 1/6/21. In Feb. 2022, the Philly Political Agnostics had a meetup entitled "Understanding Political Violence" and the 1st section delved into the ethics of political violence and whether the anti-police riots in the summer of 2020 were more or less serious than the storming of the Capitol on 1/6/21.

The 4th section of this meetup will deal with the complicated stats on hate crimes. The Philly Political Agnostics looked at the statistics on hate crimes & domestic terrorism in 2 meetups back in May of 2017. The general takeaway was that crimes officially classified as "hate crimes" are about 2 orders of magnitude less common than routine forms of violent crime that occur between members of different races/ethnic groups. (Total hate crimes in the early 2000s varied between 7-8K/yr whereas total interracial violent crimes in 2010 were about 380K.) The most common forms of hate crimes are not violent attacks but rather verbal/online harassment or defacement of property. It may be hard to get an accurate count of hate crimes, since watchdog groups claim they often go under-reported or dismissed by local law enforcement. However, the news media often gives certain hate crimes a disproportionate amount of coverage compared to routine street crime, and watchdog groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center and Anti-Defamation League have been accused of framing or “massaging” the statistics to make hate crimes & hate groups appear more pervasive. Nevertheless, hate crimes (like terrorist attacks) tend to play upon human psychology in such a way that they provoke far more anger & fear than normal crimes and strengthen in-group/out-group suspicions in a way that tears at the social fabric, so this is the rationale for pursuing them more vigorously & punishing them more severely.
A similar dynamic holds true for riots, where politically motivated riots, while relatively rare, garner lots of media attention and are often strongly condemned, whereas riots after sports games get less media attention and are often met with shrugs and comments about "crazy sports fans." The rationale for this disparity is similar to that for hate crimes - political protests that devolve into riots & lead to widespread vandalism & looting threaten to break down our social norms around using the courts & the ballot box rather than violence to resolve our political differences, whereas sports riots can cause a lot of property damage but don't generally intimidate anyone or risk leading to a civil war.
