Bear Creek Preserve, Shades Creek Loop (moderate/difficult)

Details
Natural Lands' Bear Creek Preserve sits among 150,000 protected acres above the Francis E. Walter Dam along the headwaters of the Lehigh River. The forests here preserve the wild and lonely character of the Pocono Plateau. Among the many gloomy hollows and steep sided ravines lined with hemlock and rhododendron are a multitude of waterfalls and interesting rock formations scraped out by retreating ice sheets. All good territory for viewing natural ice features in a good cold winter season.
The Natural Lands' preserve has built a network of dozens of miles of trails for us to explore. This hike will be a moderate to difficult 8 mile trek depending on ability level and trail conditions. We will make a loop up and down Shades Creek from White Haven Road. Make sure to wear appropriate attire and footwear. The trail may be rough in parts, and depending on conditions could be ICY. You are encouraged to bring TRACTION AIDS like microspikes in case of icy trail conditions. As always, bring some extra calories and ample water to get you through the day.
We will start from the Natural Lands' Preserve parking area along White Haven Road at 9:00AM. I cannot guarantee cell phone reception and will not be checking for anyone arriving late. Please make sure you arrive on time to start hiking at 9:00AM.
