Christians & Culture
Details
Jesus of Nazareth claimed to both love the world and to be in conflict with it. It isn’t surprising then that Christian teaching and practices resonate with and yet repel so many. Just how does Christianity square with culture? What is the message the world promotes about money, work, our bodies, the political scene, and race, and what light does the ancient teaching of the Bible shed on these issues of consequence? Join us as Caleb Churchill from Brooklyn, NY leads us in a discussion of the Bible’s message on “Christians & Culture.”

Each autumn Philly Bible Study hosts the Philly Bible Expo, a series of lectures and discussions aimed at encouraging conversations about the Bible that are engaging for unbelievers and enriching for believers. Our hope is that the God of the Bible will be made known and that our lives and the lives of our neighbors—here in Philadelphia and the world over—would be made better for it.
Christians and Culture
Are we shaping the culture around us, or is the culture shaping us? Jesus calls His disciples to live in the world without becoming like the world. Yet we are often more influenced by our culture than we realize. In this series, we will explore how Christians can recognize and resist the corruption in our culture, be transformed through Christ, and shine as lights in the midst of a dark world.
Christians and Money
What are the lies our culture believes about money? Disciples often fall into the same traps. But Jesus knows how to rescue His people. His wisdom can change the way we think about wealth and give us riches that will never rot and can never be robbed.
Christians and Work
Work was designed by God as good. But in a sin-cursed world, our culture shifts between two extremes. Either we move toward making career success, productivity, and status the essence of our worth, or we tend toward laziness, entitlement, and a desire for comfort rather than diligence, service, and responsibility. Jesus’ example and His teaching can set us free from chains we didn’t even know we are wearing.
Christians and the Body
Our bodies are fearfully and wonderful made to be a temple in which God can dwell. Yet the pursuit of fleshly lusts in our culture has distorted our view of the body in as we chase after pleasure, glory, and self. The gospel retrains how we view our bodies and how we use them for His glory.
Christians and Politics
In a culture divided by politics, how should Christians engage with political parties, elections, and the issues facing our communities? How does being citizens of heaven affect our politics? How does the church remain united when members have strongly opposing political positions? The gospel has the power to transform our political engagement in ways that pursue justice, love our enemies, and preserve the unity in God’s church.
Christians and Race
God created all humans to be one with him, but sin divided us into tribes and tongues. Through Christ Jesus, the barriers are broken down and God has made one multiracial, international family in Christ. But is that what we see in the church? The gospel compels us to reject racism, tribalism, and discrimination, and to embrace the beauty of diversity as we pursue God’s plan for unity and reconciliation in Christ.
