Think Ethics Seminar: The Death of Man in the Modern Age
Details
What is man? What can he do? What is he supposed to be? And has he outlived his welcome? The Western canon since Socrates has privileged the notion of "man" above that of "object" or "plant" or "animal" or "woman," but what if it's time for the idea of man to peacefully exit stage left? What kinds of politics, theology, and art become possible once we leave behind the notion of "man"? How is Western society supposed to change without the notion of "man" to regulate it? Join philosopher and proud PES member Alex Gutierrez in an afternoon of vigorous philosophical discussion investigating the works of Michel Foucault, Martin Heidegger, and Octavia Butler in relation to this pivotal question.
We'll meet in the second-floor Collier Room at 2 pm.
