Dinner and discussion: "The Demise of Democracy?"

"The Demise of Democracy?"
You could argue that the world is going a little crazy at the moment, I mean perhaps a little crazier than usual? ..... At the very least some of the goings on may have you a little unsettled.
For better or worse we in the western world have lived in what most might probably say is the best form of thought and government that has existed in the history our civilization, where the majority of people living in have at the least basic human rights and as of the present moment the most abundance that has existed ever with most people access in at least part to that wealth.
That form of government is Democracy, which has risen out out of our tribalistic a feudalistic past where only the very few had sway over most of the people to where we are now where the general idea at least in idea is that everybody gets a say or vote, it has its flaws and challenges such as its very nature is open to influence by human nature, but in general it is by far the most free any society have ever been.
However in recent times there seems to have been a large shift where, large groups of people have become bitterly divided in ideology, ideologies have become superordinate to the ideals of democracy, countries previously espousing the ideals of democracy are actively strong arming other countries into subservience or in extreme cases threatening to take over there countries in the name of peace. It seems on the surface of things that diplomacy and good will are no longer part of the process of a free society and that might is right is the more common tool of choice. At no other time in our recent history except perhaps the cold war following World War 2 has global conflict been talked about or been a concern.
Have we reached a time in history where Democracy is no longer viable? What are the factors that are driving this current level of uncertainty in our society, can we pull back from this current situation or will there inevitably be global conflict again? Either way what will be the new evolution of though and governance?
If your interested in exploring this classical concerning issue and what it might mean for us from a philosophical point of view come along on the 4 February at 6pm to the Goodwood Hotel "The Goody" for what is always a deep and enjoyable discussion on philosophical matters in a relevant modern way.
