"Consciousness, the new Holy Grail?"

Arguably the the hottest and most contentious topic in modern science at the moment especially in modern times, and indeed for a millennia in philosophy.

What is this thing that we call consciousness? so hard to define, yet we all know what it is and while it seems largely speculative, no other being is capable of possessing it, at least to a limited capability? YET others prescribe and support the idea that whole bodies of individuals can possess a consciousness? indeed the whole universe is conscious!?!
