Can we lower the political temperature? Should we?

There is no doubt that the country is deeply divided (although probably less so, and less vocally so, than in the Federal period in the 1790x). Can we, or should we, try to lower the political temperature? Could we have a new Era of Good Feelings, like after the War of 1812?
