Dōgen, Japan's most Influential Philosopher: Zen and the Art of Everyday Life

Details
We’ve explored Eastern philosophy before, but this is our first dive into a Japanese thinker — and few are as profound as Eihei Dōgen. A 13th-century Zen master, Dōgen left a lasting impact on modern Japan through Sōtō Zen and cultural values like mindfulness, simplicity, and harmony with nature.
We’ll explore his core ideas — from the unity of practice and enlightenment to his poetic view of time and being — and reflect on their relevance today.
No prior knowledge of Zen or Buddhism needed. Just bring curiosity and a willingness to sit with deep questions
Preparation:
- We warmly recommend this article by the University of St Andrews
- For diving deeper, this book is a great resource
For Philosophical Minds Zurich theme events in general:
At our theme events, we begin with a brief topic introduction, followed by engaging discussions in small groups. It’s all about conversation, not just listening. Also, please note, we keep the atmosphere relaxed and informal—there’s no pressure to speak in front of anyone.
Important: When you register for the event, please commit to it and don't be a NO SHOW. Presumably, when the ancient philosophers decided to go to an event, they kept to it.
We look forward to seeing you.
