LONG NIGHT OF PHILOSOPHY: The "und" Problem
Details
This event is part of the 'Lange Nacht der Philosophie' (Long Night of Philosophy), a city-wide celebration in Zurich featuring 24 hours of philosophical events. Now in its 11th edition, the program has traditionally been held entirely in German — which is why we’re especially excited to offer what may be the only event in English🥳.
Wissenschaft und Philosophie - the motto's small word hides an assumption most of us never think to question. Every field treats the "und" as neutral, a simple ampersand between neighbours. This evening session argues it isn't.
Florence and Stefano, of the English-language discussion group Philosophical Minds Zurich, open with a demonstration that will make you doubt what "knowing" something even means, to then push further into places where our best knowledge quietly works without anyone understanding why, science included. Somewhere along the way, one host starts arguing for a position neither of them actually holds - and you won't be told which one, or when.
Expect real disagreement between the two of them, no script to fall back on, and an open floor to the audience once the ground beneath the motto has properly shifted. No prior philosophy knowledge required, just a willingness to lose your footing a little.
We're excited to welcome you at Kirchgemeindehaus Wiedikon
- See below for details on how to get there. Please be respectful and punctual
- Payable in advance online: The event comes with a fee of CHF 15 while early-bird is CHF 12
For this event:
We will start with a bilateral discussion, including a third opinion to open up the floor to the audience. You are invited to join the discussion. Your thoughts and opinions are highly appreciated!
Important: When you register for the event, please commit to it and don't be a NO SHOW. Presumably, when the old philosophers decided to go to an event, they kept to it ;)
We look forward to seeing you
