Hello Philosophy Fans!
UPDATE – the February 2022 Meetup is this Sunday, Feb. 27, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. We're meeting by Zoom this month; join in by phone or by computer with a microphone and (preferably) a webcam. Shortly before the meeting starts, I'll send a Zoom invitation with the link and some discussion notes.
If your plans to attend have changed, please update your RSVP.
The winner of the email vote and the topic for Sunday is:
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE AND VALUE OF EDUCATION? What functions and goals does education have in our society? What purposes should it serve? What positive roles has education played in your life?
---------------------------
READINGS FOR THE TOPIC – I have only one reading for you this time. Jot down your thoughts and bring them to our discussion!
https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/education-philosophy/ (portions of it, not the entire entry)
The "Philosophy of Education" entry in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy covers many aspects of the subject, but the only relevant parts for our topic are sections 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3 (these sections combined are 8 pages long). I'd skip the rest of the article. Written by philosophers Harvey Siegel, D.C. Phillips, and Eamonn Callan, this is one of their non-technical articles, happily jargon-free.

See you there!
Brian
