About us
Philosophy Café is held on the first Sunday of every month from 2-4 pm (times may vary) at (venue as advertised), Brighton . Entry free (donations appreciated, either cash on the day, or via PayPal); pay for your own refreshments and join in with the discussion. The afternoon begins with a brief introduction to the theme. Discussion then follows between groups of those attending. Past experience suggests that the discussion will be animated! Finally, there will then be an opportunity to share thoughts and conclusions with everyone present. This is an opportunity to explore the subjects in a convivial setting including conversation, coffee and cake available from the café. PREVIOUS TOPICS: Creation - an act of love? What is the value of truth? What is reality? Is God real? What is the role of compassion in our lives today? What does it matter whether animals have a soul or not? Do we prefer materialism because it limits us?

Should We Serve Others?
Cafe Quench, 50 George Street, Hove, GBService to others can be said to be where we show love and kindness to everyone, even to those who do not treat us well. This can be in many ways.
One way to serve others can be to show them that we care, such as giving our time and encouragement to someone. People who are lonely can benefit by chatting with others. By providing love and support it's possible to make a difference in the lives of others.
Some careers have traditionally been associated with service, such as medicine and education. However, every job can be said to provide a service to others. If someone is willing to pay for a product or service it shows that they find it valuable. If an employer is willing to pay someone a wage, it illustrates that they value the work of that employee. Even though we get paid for our work, we are still providing a service. Can the spirit of service be seen in all aspects of work? What are our thoughts on the 'Rail Service' for example?
Can we serve others by ensuring that they have the resources they need, even if they could not normally afford them, perhaps by supporting causes and movements which contribute to the wellbeing of others. Can this also be achieved by taxation and redistribution through the government. If so, should we be honest and ethical with paying our taxes?
Should politicians be dedicated to helping others? We elect them to represent us, so should they be serving our needs and not their own?
Can praying for others be a form of service? For the secular, what about meditation, and becoming still, can this be of benefit to others around us?
Can serving others be selfless or altruistic? Or will there always be expectation of a result or reward, even if it's a sense of satisfaction?
