September Socrates Cafe

Details
For our September meetup we will consider some cosmology. Specifically we’ll talk about Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity and Quantum Mechanics as explanations for the observed forces in the universe: gravity, magnetism, electricity, light. But as we are a philosophy meetup not a physics meetup we will discuss these theories in the context of our own observations and beliefs about them.*
As a discussion piece, everyone should view this short video in which Brian Greene discusses Einstein’s own attachments to his life’s work and core philosophy and how this created a barrier to his acceptance of quantum physics – despite the supporting empirical evidence.

*I do expect to discuss some actual physics on a lay person's level. Given how long it's been since I engaged with the subject I am hopeful that others with more knowledge than me will help steer the discussion.
As always, all are welcome, regardless of background. Socrates Cafe is an open, welcoming space for democratic dialog across the broad spectrum of philosophical issues. All attendees should follow these guidelines:
- Come to learn.
- Listen first, last and always.
- Be respectful of everyone's perspective.
- Explore, but take care not to digress.
- Help facilitate. This is your community.
