Hi Folks,

Welcome to our Freud reading group. This group will be facilitated by myself and other graduate students studying this material.

For this group we require attendees to read the papers in advance in order to attend. To participate please also join our Reading Freud mailing list here:
https://groups.google.com/g/readingfreud/

For this event we will be reading select excerpts from Freud, as compiled by Peter Gay in "The Freud Reader", beginning in the section "Making of a Psychoanalyst", available here which includes the following listed below.

  • Preface to the Translation of Bernheim’s Suggestion (pp. 45–48) - Here we read Freud's preface to Bernheim's book "Suggestion", where Freud argues why hypnosis and suggestion are legitimate therapeutic tools.
  • Draft B: The Aetiology of the Neuroses (pp. 55–60) - Here Freud talks about two psychological disorders, neurasthenia (similar to chronic fatigue) and anxiety and his proposal that their origins are due to sex.
  • Anna O. (pp. 61–78) - Here we read Freud's famous case conceptualization based on Breuer's patient Anna O, which shows how hysteria can be resolved by catharsis with talk therapy.
  • Katharina (pp. 79–86) - Another famous case. Freud shows us how his patient's anxiety stems from repressed sexual trauma.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Ryan
