Hi Folks,

Welcome to our Freud reading group. This group will be facilitated by myself and other graduate students studying this material.

It is welcome to all, even if you've never read Freud or any other psychology. However for this group we require attendees to read the papers in advance in order to attend. It's ok if you didn't fully comprehend them, but please at least make an attempt to read them. We can then help clarify things for everyone during the event. Please also join our Reading Freud mailing list here:
https://groups.google.com/g/readingfreud/
The reason for the mailing list is because supplemental information regarding the event is often posted here.

For this next event we will continue reading "The Making of a Psychoanalyst", containing select excerpts from Freud, as compiled by Peter Gay in "The Freud Reader", available here which includes the following listed below:

Project for a Scientific Psychology (3 pages)
Freud’s first attempt to explain the mind as a natural science, using concepts of neuronal energy and mental processes. While he later abandoned this model, it contains the foundations of many of his later psychoanalytic ideas.

Draft K (7 pages)
An early outline of Freud’s theory of the neuroses, introducing concepts such as repression, defense, compromise formation, and the return of the repressed.

The Aetiology of Hysteria (15 pages)
Freud presents his famous seduction theory, arguing that hysteria originates in repressed memories of childhood sexual experiences. Although he later rejected this theory, the paper marks an important step in the development of psychoanalysis.

Letters to Fliess (6 pages)
A selection of Freud’s correspondence documenting the evolution of his thinking as he moves away from the seduction theory toward the concepts of unconscious fantasy and repression.

Screen Memories (10 pages)
Freud explores how vivid childhood memories often conceal deeper unconscious meanings, arguing that seemingly insignificant memories can serve as substitutes for more emotionally important experiences.

I put the paper into AI and asked it to explain it and it made this video:

I look forward to seeing you there!
