Will Vegetarianism Save the Planet?
Details
Does the planet actually need saving?
Vegetarians don’t eat meat. Dietary vegans avoid food derived from animals, such as eggs and milk. Ethical vegans go further, trying to avoid all forms of animal exploitation, not just those relating to food.
What are the ethical, and health issues for example, for the individual, and the planet as a whole for the way we produce and consume food? Also, does the bigger picture of what we consume need to be considered for our own welfare and that of the planet? We consume anything from food and drink to clothing, consumer goods, music, media, services and anything else you care to name. To feed this hunger there is an ever increasing army of marketers trying to attract our attention with ever more sophisticated means. But, is all this consumption doing us any good?
What are the consequences of environmental degradation and the limits to the capacity of the planet to feed our insatiable appetites?
Some 2000 years ago a man struggling with his own demons retorted "Man does not live by bread alone". He wasn't denying the need for food but rather reminding himself that there is more to Man than his physical
frame. Much more in fact and these other parts need to be fed too. What for example constitutes food for healthy mind and healthy emotions? What clouds our judgement and what nourishes our spirit? While we know the substances that are harmful to the body; what acts as poison to our capacity to reason and empathise with fellow human beings?
What nurtures our happiness and self confidence and what causes their degradation?
