Philosophy Roundtable: Exploring Carl Jung and others

Details

This week, we will be discussing ideas from Jung, Freud and others including Alfred Adler, Mircea Eliade and Erich Neumann. We will be exploring their ideas, and first critiquing them then applying their findings to our current context.

This session is open to any other philosophical, psychological or similarly orientated individuals, schools of thought, spiritual interpretations or other perspectives by attendees.

We will be meeting at the Captain Melville, 34 Franklin St in Melbourne CBD at 2:00pm. Note these events are a roundtable format, often with vigorous debate, so please come ready to challenge assumptions and have your own assumptions challenged!

Some points and questions to consider before the event:

  • What did Jung mean by Individuation? Is it similar to other spiritual or philosophical pursuits?
  • What is consciousness?
  • What is the Shadow and why is its confrontation necessary for Individuation?
  • What is the collective unconscious and what is the Self?
  • What did Jung mean in his prophetic vision in his book Aion?
  • What was Jung's assessment of Nazi Germany?
  • Why did Jung and Freud split, and what are the differences between their respective schools?
  • Does Adler complement Jung and/or Freud?
  • What did Erich Neumann find concerning the evolutionary history of anthropology and stories in human cultures' 'coming to consciousness'?
  • What did Mircea Eliade find, similarly, concerning the evolutionary history of man 'coming to consciousness' and the effect of rituals?
  • What did other psychologists, philosophers, schools of thoughts or spiritual traditions have to say about human conscious development?
  • In light of this inquiry, what is the relationship between the topic and A.I., technology, consumer society, etc.?

Hope to see you there!
