Please join us this Sunday to discuss our orientation to the future. We will be exploring a range of areas such as faith, anxiety and control, both at an individual and social level. Please feel free to bring your own questions.

We will meet at the Captain Melville at 2pm for a 2:15pm start sharp.
Please note the new $5 mandatory donation entry fee (cash or transfer on day) to help with MeetUp subscription costs.

There is no pre-requisite preparation necessary, nor a philosophical background, all that is required is a curious mind. These discussions are both a Socrates Cafe style discussion and lively metaphysical dojo, in the spirit of learning and friendly debate, so please feel free to challenge assumptions and be prepared to have your own assumptions challenged.

This event is also posted to the Socrates Cafe group.

Questions may include:

  • Do people with faith in God, a trust in the universe, or a materialistic viewpoint tend to face the future in different ways?
  • Are trusting in God and carefully planning for the future compatible with each other?
  • Is anxiety about the future something to be treated or information to be listened to?
  • Does widespread insurance and risk pricing change our relationship to trying to control the future?
  • Can prediction markets help us make better decisions?
  • How should we make decisions about the welfare of future generations compared to our own (discount rates)
  • Can anxiety about the future lead to attempts to control it, which may be attempts to control others.

Hope to see you there!
