Philosopher Spotlight: Marcus Aurelius

Marcus Aurelius, the philosopher king, also renowned as one of the five great emperors, presided over a stable and prosperous Roman Empire in the second century CE. An intellectual at heart, Marcus nevertheless took upon the throne as a duty and greatly expanded Roman territories and legislations, before passing away at the age of 58.

He is best known in this generation for the memoir Meditations, written during his travels as a journalistic way of self improvement. Continuing in Seneca’s footsteps, Meditations offers several insights into how a person can change their mindset, despite being powerless to their destiny.
