Seneca the younger (1 BC - 65 AD) was a prominent Roman Senator during the decadent times of Caligula and Nero. He was a prolific writer and playwright, with works that are accessible to this day.

Despite the indulgent times of the day, he was a Stoic who continued the traditions of Xeno and Epicurus. It is interesting to note though, that Seneca did live a life of material luxury. Seneca predated Marcus Aurelius, the other famous stoic.

Let’s then discuss the life and works of his, and the ethics of balancing excess and restraint. Will modern day civilization permit us to practice any of these teachings?
