From Oracle to Absurd: Rethinking the Hero
Details
In light of the public reckoning surrounding figures connected to the scandal of Jeffrey Epstein, let's examine a timeless question: Do we need heroes?
From celebrity culture to political leaders, modern society often elevates individuals to near mythic status. But are admiration and moral authority the same thing? We'll revisit Plato's Apology, where Socrates investigates the Delphic oracle's claim that he is the wisest man alive - only to discover that true wisdom begins in recognizing one's ignorance. We will also draw from Albert Camus' confrontation with absurdity and Nietzsche's critique of idols, to ask whether a mature mind replaces hero worship with self-authorship.
Are heroes necessary models of virtuem or just comforting illusions in a morally complex world? Join us as we explore the tension between reverence, skepticism, and the search for integrity in an age of disillusionment.
