Spooks and Speculations: The Witch
In this session, we’ll dig into the history and philosophy of witchcraft, from kishuf and biblical prohibitions to the European witch hunts, the figure of the bruja, folk medicine, ritual, magic, and the strange boundary between “superstition,” religion, medicine, and science.
Along the way, we’ll ask some uncomfortable questions, such as:
🔮 Who gets to decide what counts as legitimate knowledge?
🕯️ What makes a ritual different from an experiment?
🌿 When does healing become medicine, and when does it become witchcraft?
⚖️ What happens when suspicion becomes evidence?
And because philosophy should occasionally involve actually doing philosophy… there may be some practical magic involved.
Come prepared to think, question, speculate, and possibly summon something.
No broomstick required, but welcome.
