What we’re about
Join us for insightful discussions and social events at iconic locations around the city.
Everyone is welcome here, for making friends, finding collaborators, expressing opinion or gaining perspective. Our non academic discussions occur each week. Topics can vary from profound theories or individual ideas to entire movements that shaped the world. Chat is broken up with games, presentations, challenges and post match social drinks. Philosophy was a way of life for many ancient Greeks. So too was festival, ritual and revelry.
There are no hard rules here, only that natural rights should be respected, specifically freedom of speech and expression. It is an anarchic order, there are no leaders! The primary objective of this community is to promote civic and personal virtue. Namely those core virtues of wisdom, courage, temperance & justice. We aim to strengthen mental resilience, gain intellect and attain a level of 'intellectual self-defense' by practicing the liberal arts! We investigate human culture, philosophy, history, spirituality & anthropology through a range of philosophical ideas ancient through to modern.
Welcome to a society for iconoclasts, intellectuals, dissidents and rogue thinkers!

See all- Basement Session: Crafting An EthosChrist Church St Lawrence, Sydney
NB: DUPLICATE LISTING FROM PHILOSOPHY FIGHT CLUB AND SOCIAL ANTICS
Celebrate the formation of this group in the first of these new underground sessions. Brought to you Gothick Picturesque style on the cellar level of this symbolic building! A space that has the right kind of energy to spark off some seriously spicy philosophical banter every Wednesday night!
❗Update❗ Fight Cub at this stage has no rules, thus the first of these new sessions will focus on crafting an ethos, establishing the rules of fight club and charting a direction.
The format is round table discussion. This will give everyone a chance to weigh in on a sample of existential questions, a brief history of philosophy, the value of the liberal arts and how we can apply them practically to improve our lives. There will be a short break halfway through as well as ice breakers, games and group exercises to mix it up.
Some questions to consider for discussion:
What is philosophy? Why are you interested in philosophy?
What is one of your favorite philosophical aphorisms or quotes?
What is wisdom? What is enlightenment?
What is consciousness? Who or what are you?
Could we be living in a dream or simulation?
Who are the greatest thinkers at the present time?
What is human nature? Do we have natural rights? In lieu of any hard rules I ask that everyone practice common sense and show respect to all. Any anti-social behavior will be dealt with swiftly.
This session like all going forward will be about making new connections, strengthening the mind and having a bit of fun. A few post-match drinks is also an option for all and any who might be keen.
I look forward to seeing you all there.
BlakeImportant❗- Entrance to the building is at 505 Pitt Street (the Central Station side of St Laurence Church). Someone will be at the gate to show you in and down to the basement as you arrive. Please aim to arrive on time or early as doors will close at 6:30pm latest.
