Is Optimism Just Wishful Thinking?
Details
We’re told to stay positive.. look on the bright side.. trust that things will work out.
But what if that’s not wisdom… just wishful thinking?
This month at Philosophy in Pubs, we’re putting optimism under pressure — and giving pessimism a proper hearing.
The 19th-century philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer argued that life is not driven by happiness, but by endless striving. We chase what we want, we get it, and then we’re left restless again. Satisfaction is short-lived. Desire returns. And beneath it all, there’s a constant undercurrent of frustration and suffering.
In his view, happiness isn’t the norm — it’s the brief absence of pain.
So is he right?
Is optimism a useful illusion that keeps us going… or does it stop us seeing things clearly?
Is pessimism just negativity… or a more honest account of what life is actually like?
And if the pessimists are right — what should we do about it?
As always, there’s no structure, no right answers, and no need to know any philosophy. Just come along, grab a drink, and join the conversation.
Expect thoughtful discussion, contrasting perspectives, and a few ideas that might challenge how you see your own life.
See you there.
