[NYC Stoics Reading Group] What do our impressions say?
Details
[Cross-posted from NYC Stoics]
"Impressions" (phantasiai in Greek) are grist for the mill of Stoic practice; they're the main material we work with in an attempt to progress as Stoic practitioners. But in order to work with them effectively, we have to understand what exactly they are.
At this meetup, we'll be taking our first step into Stoic logic by taking a look at what impressions are, and what they "say" to us, with Simon Shogry as our guide. The paper we'll be reading this month presents one theory of Stoic impressions. In the process of exploring that theory, we'll gain a better understanding of what impressions are and how we can practice with them.
To prepare for this meetup, please read Simon Shogry's "What do our impressions say? The Stoic theory of perceptual content and belief formation" in full and come prepared with questions or concepts you want to discuss. This paper is long and a little difficult, but do your best to digest what you can; we'll be covering the important bits at the meetup.
