THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV BY FYODOR DOSTOYEVSKY

Details

Dr. Nash Jocic will delve into the philosophical dimensions of Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, often hailed as one of the greatest novels ever written. In this lecture, Dr. Jocic will explore Dostoevsky's profound examination of human nature, morality, faith, and freedom, while emphasizing the author's views on the existence of God, the problem of evil, and humanity's search for meaning. A key focus will be the ideological conflict between the novel's central characters, the brothers Alyosha and Ivan.
Alyosha embodies spiritual faith and the virtues of love and humility, deeply rooted in Eastern Orthodox Christianity. In contrast, Ivan represents intellectual rebellion and doubt, most notably expressed in his "Grand Inquisitor" parable, a critique of organized religion and humanity's preference for comfort and security over true freedom.
The lecture will also address Ivan’s poignant argument against God, rooted in the profound injustice of innocent suffering—especially that of children—which he deems morally indefensible, even in the context of eternal harmony. This dilemma challenges readers to confront the limits of human understanding and the enigmatic nature of divine justice.
For Dostoevsky, love emerges as the ultimate redemptive force, transcending suffering and sin. Dr. Jocic will also examine Dostoevsky’s assertion that life’s deepest questions cannot be resolved through logic alone, advocating instead for a harmonious integration of rational inquiry and spiritual faith as a means of understanding the human condition.
Following the lecture, participants will have the opportunity to engage in a discussion, sharing their reflections and insights.
Your continued support by purchasing drinks and food from the bar is essential to securing this venue for future events.
As announced at our last event, we have introduced voluntary donations with a suggested minimum of £10. Organizing events of this depth and quality on a monthly basis has become increasingly challenging to sustain. We greatly appreciate your understanding and support through these contributions, which will help us maintain the same level of quality and consistency in meeting your expectations.
You can make a donation either before the event through our website at www.philosophymatters.net or in person during the event.
Thnk you for your understanding and support. Dr. Nash Jocic
