## The Weight of Freedom: From Dostoevsky to Sartre

### A Philosophy Matters UK Live Talk with Dr. Nash Jocic

Event Fee: £20 (collected at the venue — card or cash)
What does it truly mean to be free — and why do so many of us fear the very thing we desire?
From Dostoevsky’s tormented characters who struggle under the burden of choice, to Sartre’s claim that we are “condemned to be free,” this talk explores the exhilaration, responsibility, and psychological weight of human freedom.
In this engaging session, Dr. Nash Jocic traces the dramatic journey from 19th-century existential anxiety to 20th-century existential responsibility. We will examine how:

  • Dostoevsky exposes the psychological weight of freedom through guilt, rebellion, and the longing for authority
  • Nietzsche dismantles traditional morality and challenges us to create our own values
  • Sartre argues that we must accept radical responsibility for everything we are and everything we choose

This talk introduces existentialism not as abstract theory, but as a lived confrontation with choice, meaning, and the self. Whether you are new to philosophy or already familiar with these thinkers, this session offers a clear, compelling, and deeply human exploration of the question that shapes every life:
What will you do with your freedom?
