Reading Group: "The Things" by Peter Watts
Details
For this iteration of the Philosophy of Life Sciences Reading Group, we will be exploring a short story by the science fiction writer Peter Watts. In The Things, finalist for the 2011 Hugo Awards, Watts, whose work often explores themes of consciousness and free will, reimagines John Carpenter's The Thing from the perspective of the alien. In doing so, the story raises questions about alienation, individuality, and the nature of biological identity and adaptation.
