THIS WEEK: Our methods, or how we do things, determine the results we get. Physics requires observation and experiment. Logic and mathematics call for analytic thought. Similar distinctions obtain in analytic, continental and other schools of philosophy, which can be largely defined by their different methods and subject matter. Given these differences, to what extent should we expect the scientifically oriented methods of analytic philosophy to produce positive results in the humanities, in ethics, and in understanding human existence, particularly in its more nebulous forms such as consciousness? Reading: The Pursuit of Value, Ch. 1, Scn. vii
