The weekly topic is posted a week before the event, together with a suggested reading from my work The Pursuit of Value, available through Amazon Books or myself. Transcripts of the Youtube presentation are available by email.

THIS WEEK: The character of mind or consciousness has long been regarded as an enduring mystery, from its religious projection as ‘spirit’, to Husserl’s “mystery of mysteries” and David Chalmers’ “hard problem”. However, in the face of academic criticisms, Daniel Dennett claims to resolve these problems in his book Consciousness Explained. Does he really explain consciousness, or does he just evade the hard problems and argue against the straw man of ‘Cartesian dualism’ and ‘mind stuff’ only found in undergraduates’ note books? Reading: The Pursuit of Value, Ch. 6, Scn. i.
