THIS WEEK: Ethical theory and morality have been thought to be one of, if not, mankind’s most unequivocal aspiration. But Nietzsche’s Beyond Good and Evil, and then postmodernism, have challenged the very idea of morality. Social and psychological theory have weakened the notion of moral responsibility, and the major theories of ethics are in conflict and without secure justification. Is the idea of morality in danger of collapse, or can it be shored up or even replaced by other systems such as psychology, meaning, purpose or value? Reading: The Pursuit of Value, Ch. 4, Scn. i.
