THIS WEEK: Ayn Rand is a novelist and philosopher whose work has had a mixed reception. Her explicitly ‘objectivist’ positions on epistemology, language, ethics and politics might be thought to have been well received. So, is her widely viewed lack of credibility due to her anti-social views like ethical egoism, the priority of personal survival, and her rationalism, rather than the quality of her philosophical arguments? My interest in Rand stems from comparisons and contrasts between different conceptions of self-value, the prioritization or neglect of value, and an appreciation of subjectivity or objectivity.
