THIS WEEK: Immanuel Kant is thought of as the father of modern moral philosophy, and he produced an ethical system that built on Christianity, common sense and reason. But it has many problems. There’s a tension between a religious view of self-abnegation in that God is everything, and the humanity that his ethics is known for. Modern critiques of reason also seem to have undermined Kant’s foundations? And are the Kantian notions of moral law, duty and dignity sufficient to ground and explain the practice of ethics as it has come to be understood? Reading: The Pursuit of Value, Ch. 4, Scn. vi.
