THIS WEEK: It is surprising to discover that the major theories of Kantian, utilitarian and virtue theory ethics, have deep flaws which undermine them as acceptable ethical systems. It might then be either, expected or surprising, to also discover that value itself is absent from the lexicon of moral philosophy, not as a concept, but as a leading principle of ethical theory. We aren’t just talking about the concept of value common to all theories of ethics, but value as the guiding principle of a theory of ethics. Can such a ‘value theory ethics’ resolve problems that other theories cannot? Reading: The Pursuit of Value, Ch. 2, Scn. viii.
