THIS WEEK: Philosophy of Value Workshops,

Nietzsche presented the future task of philosophers as the determination of “the order and rank among values”, yet he didn’t detail the nature of those values. He demolished religious and ethical values, but his ‘aesthetic justification of the world’ left us with questions of ethical normativity, meaning and purpose, as well as issues about facts, reason, emotion and other people. Kant’s ‘categorical imperative’ and its demands of universality had failed, but fundamental questions remain. Can these be answered with a subjective and self-validating ‘value imperative’ that is comprehensive, nevertheless? Reading: The Pursuit of Value, Ch. 2, Scn. ix.
