THIS WEEK: Meaning and purpose imply that life can be worth-while and valuable. Yet the notion of ‘the meaning of life’ implies that there is one such meaning, that it is some external property waiting to be discovered, and that such is both coherent and possible. But does the notion of ‘meaning’ represent anything substantial? Or is it a collective idea for diverse aspects of the ‘good life’? Is there a central principle or value-focus that can replace the archaic notion of ‘the meaning of life’? Reading; The Pursuit of Value, Ch. 5, Scns. i, ii & vi.
