THIS WEEK: Nietzsche presented the future task of philosophers as the determination of “the order and rank among values”. But rank and hierarchy have given way to radical revision and questions of coherence. And a question of priority remains all the more crucial amongst hedonistic, aesthetic, ethical and other values. GE Moore defined intrinsic value by its ‘organic unity’. Sartre advocated freedom and choice. Can we determine the priority of values by such ‘internal’ criteria, or are values just subject to ‘external’ criteria like social or neurological influences?
