THIS WEEK: Both modern and postmodern thought presents ‘truth’ as a value-laden human artifact. Yet it still functions well as, what Kant called, a ‘regulative concept’ or principle. And although Bernard Williams speaks of an “unconditional will to truth” he still relegates ‘truth’ as an everyday notion that we have to use in order to navigate the world. ‘Truth’ cannot therefore be employed simply as an objective ideal to establish values. But we can ask, whether it can be used as a means of qualifying the kinds of values that we might legitimately pursue, like intrinsic values, or value itself?
