THIS WEEK: In our continuing examination of relations between supporting cognitive states and values or sufficient values, we have considered different modes of cognition and the scope of their relation with value states. This has implied a preference for a certain sufficiency or independence of value from cognitive support. This week, we need to examine this preference, and consider, for example, whether Bernard William’s analysis of moral self-indulgence is able to articulate it.
