THIS WEEK: The idea of human existence raises the issue of whether it can be posed as a coherent question at all, because it’s too amorphous, diverse and variable. Wittgenstein, for instance, states that “What we cannot speak about we must pass over” and he thereby attempts to ‘dissolve’— with linguistic analysis— rather than resolve such questions. Yet Heidegger tells us that the “Being of one’s own Dasein is an issue”, and he proceeds to explain how it can be resolved with care and authenticity.
